King's Verse: dróttkvætt

complex poetic style of the Viking Age

The poetic meter called dróttkvætt:

Two units of four lines each.

Each line has six syllables, three of them stressed.

In each line, the last two syllables are: stressed then unstressed.

In each line, the first four syllables: stress placement doesn't matter.

Each odd-numbered line has a full rhyme occurring.

Each even-numbered line has a half or full rhyme occurring.

Couplets: pairing of odd and even-numbered lines: 1+2, 3+4, 5+6, 7+8

In each couplet, the odd-numbered line has two alliterating syllables, which continue by alliterating with the first syllable of the even-numbered line.

Use of kennings and rhymes.

Example (by Joyce Holt):

1. Woe, the meadow's master:
2. mighty, tall, soon fallen
3. when winter winds batter.
4. Wit calls for roots knit well.

5. Weaklings seeking shelter,
6. side by side, toes entwined,
7. outlast their master's life,
8. leaning all together.

The last few lines don't fully adhere to the pattern.
